The Business Emergency Planning Institute, the successor organization to the American Red Cross Business Emergency Planning Association, has two goals:  to be a business continuity planning resource for businesses, non profits and government agencies and to promote the importance of business continuity planning to those who have yet to fully appreciate the vital role it plays in keeping businesses—the backbone of our economy—running.

You arrive at work only to find a big red fire truck, ambulance and police cars. Bank statements arrive that don’t mesh with the checkbook. Your computer server crashes. A snowstorm paralyzes the city. A key executive departs unexpectedly. The flu hits pandemic status.

Man-made disasters affect one in 10 small businesses. Natural disasters impact more than 30 percent of all businesses in the United States. Power outages. Floods. Water line breaks. Fires. Employee theft. Terrorism. Communicable disease outbreaks. IT failures. The list goes on, but planning should start now.

Even if your organization isn't affected directly by a disaster, what if your employees, suppliers, customers or community experience an emergency? How will that impact your operations?
